Carolyn Urquhart, Physiotherapist

Carolyn Urquhart is a Registered Physiotherapist and Accredited Lymphoedema Practitioner. She holds a Bachelor Degree of Physiotherapy from the University of Queensland and is a level 2 Accredited Lymphoedema Practitioner on the National Lymphoedema Practitioners Register (NLPR) through the Australasian Lymphology Association (ALA). She has been working as a valuable part of the team here at The Breast Centre for the past 10 years, has been working as a Lymphoedema Therapist for 14 years and concurrently as a Musculoskeletal Physiotherapist for over 25 years.

Part of Carolyn’s role at The Breast Centre involves patient pre-operative education and carrying out baseline assessments to assist with monitoring for early signs of lymphoedema and musculoskeletal dysfunction after treatment for breast cancer. Timely post-operative review supports patients in restoration of their shoulder function and comfort, to assist them with return to, and involvement in, those activities that are important to them.

She can assist with concerns such as Axillary Web Syndrome (cording), lymphoedema, joint restriction, movement dysfunction, scar tissue restrictions, radiation fibrosis and seromas. She is able to prescribe both off the shelf and custom-made compression garments.

Carolyn works with her patient’s own personal goals and interests to find ways to stay active and reduce the loss of strength and functional capacity during their treatment. Working together, they can establish strategies to reduce some of the side effects of treatment by using the prescription of tailored exercise advice to improve outcomes, as evidenced convincingly in research.

She is dedicated to ongoing education and regularly attends ALA conferences, symposiums, courses and lectures. She has recently completed her PINC Cancer Rehabilitation Certification to support women through their cancer diagnosis, treatment and recovery, and feels very honoured to share in such a personal experience with you.

Carolyn lives locally in beautiful Lake Macquarie and loves spending time with her husband, two teenagers and much loved schnauzer, Peppa.
